SADBOI
You know, it's gonna sound so crazy but I'm really, really inspired by a lot of the girls on Tumblr. I don't even know if people still use Tumblr, but I still use Tumblr. I get a lot of my inspo from like, girls on Tumblr, cuz I don't know like, you just don't find people that dress like that on like Instagram or Twitter, like all of the fire people be on Tumblr.

So what was your favorite thing to do around Toronto growing up.
SADBOI
My favorite thing to do in Toronto growing up was probably bike riding with my friends. And we'd always go to Pat's homestyle Jamaican restaurant, and we'd get jerk chicken and share it!

Give me your top 3 Toronto restaurant's.
SADBOI
It would be Pat's homestyle but they closed, but Pat's, HONGSHENG, oh and anywhere, with poutine I really love poutine! There's this poutine spot on Weston road. I really love poutine. I don't remember the name of it, because it's just like this like little like pizza shop.

Ooh, Young Money. Why them 2?
SADBOI
Because I feel like growing up.... Well "Pink Friday" was like the first project, the first album, that my parents ever bought me. So I was like, 10 when that album came out, and that was like the first album that my mom actually went to the store and was like "Oh, I'm gonna buy this for you and your sister". So Nicki Minaj was like a huge, huge, huge, huge, huge, like piece of my childhood. And Drake, I mean, he's from Toronto. I feel like he puts Toronto on to be honest with you and open doors for so many Toronto artists, including myself. And his music is amazing, sooo Drake. Oh, and he's also he's a sad boy. We'd make like a really cool track I feel like.

Great answer (laughing). What influences your music?
SADBOI
I would say heartbreak. Heartbreak is like a big thing for me. Heartbreak and I also think what I see like, people close to me go through. That's like a really big thing. So like, even if there's times where I may not necessarily be like going..... well I'm always going through something I'm not even gonna sugarcoat it (laughing) umm act like I'm surrounded by so many women in my family and they all have like their own you know, like, stuff going on and I feel like that really influences me, especially being like the youngest. Like you just grew up with so many like cousins that are older than you and they're all like females so you see what they go through and it's like damn. So I always write about that as well.

How did growing up in Toronto have an effect on your music?
SADBOI
Umm growing up in Toronto definitely effected my music because it's very diverse. So it's like a melting pot of people from all over the world and I feel like that plays like a huge part in like my music. So like Caribbean culture, even like dance, like the production, the things that I'm into production wise. The nightlife like the scene, like the things that I was like, able to experience, even like the music I was able to experience and take in, the food. All that play's a big role in my music, to be honest with you.

What made you want to become an artist?
SADBOI
Um, you know what's so interesting? I always knew that I had like, a love for music, but I didn't really understand. Like, I didn't really understand that you could be an artist. So I just really enjoyed making music and singing and it wasn't until probably when I started doing YouTube covers, I was like, damn, like, I could actually have a career out of this, and I started performing more. So I would say like, when I was like, around like 11 or 12. And like, when I noticed I could actually take it seriously I was probably like, 15 or 16. That's when I was like, okay, I can actually make a career out of this.

(Laughs) I love that answer. And for the last question. What's Sadboi's plans for 2024?
SADBOI
Definitely to stay consistent, keep dropping and I think honestly build a safe space for... you know, I feel like kids that kind of were like the outcast because I feel like that's a really big thing for me because growing up when I got bullied I didn't really have people that I could really like look up to to say they went through this and stuff like that. So I think building like a safe space for people and a community for people. Yeah, consistent more music and building my community.
